Which Fiber is Right for Your Business?
Single-Mode vs. Multimode. Which is better?
-
Single Mode Fiber:
Pros:
Longer distances
Larger bandwidth
Cons:
Cost
-
Multimode Fiber:
Pros:
Cost
Cons:
Suitable only up to 1,800 feet
Often utilizes LED rather than laser
Single-mode and multimode both have their strengths and weaknesses. Generally speaking, single-mode is able to handle a larger bandwidth and can travel nearly 10 times as far as multimode with no loss. In 10Gb Base SE-SR applications, single-mode can travel up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) uninterrupted! Under the same conditions, multimode can only travel 550m (1800 feet) . The drawback of this performance, however, is cost.
In regards to the actual cable itself, single-mode is actually cheaper than multimode. However, when you factor in the fiber heads, bulkheads, and transmission systems, single-mode fiber solutions can cost nearly 5 times a multimode system. It is not recommended to mix and match the systems components together, as this will almost certainly cause significant drop off in performance.
That being said, multimode is still a very viable option for smaller networks or businesses that are connecting adjacent buildings, floors, or server rooms. Multimode still offers advanced performance and lightning fast speeds so long as the systems aren’t too far apart.
Whichever you choose, ACS can install either one to the highest standard!
